This is notification of an upcoming change to the way you log in to VSC resources from an academic center or campus building. Beginning June 20, 2023, you will see the Duo Security prompt when logging in to web-based VSC resources from our academic centers and campus locations. We understand that this change may be inconvenient, but it is a necessary change to ensure the safety and security of our network and data. We appreciate your cooperation.
What is changing
Currently, locations on the Vermont State Colleges internet network, e.g. academic centers, campus buildings, and office spaces, are exempt from using our Duo Security, so you only see the prompt at home or at other off-campus locations. With this change, you will now be prompted to verify your identity with Duo Security when accessing applications behind VSC single sign-on, like Canvas, Aviso, Portal, UKG, Microsoft Office 365, when you are in classrooms, campus buildings, offices, and conference buildings. It will be important to remember to bring your device with you if you need to log in from another location, like in a classroom.
How to prepare
The Duo Mobile application is the easiest way to authenticate, but you can set up multiple methods of authentication. To add another authentication method, navigate to any resource that will prompt you for Duo log-in (e.g. Canvas) and click on Add a new device. If you do not want to use a personal device, hardware tokens are available by request. Information about requesting a hardware token can be found on our FAQ page.
Enrollment
If you still have not enrolled in Duo Security, we will be resending the automated enrollment email. If you do not receive the enrollment email, that means you are already enrolled, and no action is needed. If you do receive the enrollment email, please take the time to enroll ahead of this change.
Duo “Remember me”
The Duo prompt has a checkbox “Remember me for 24 hours,” so you will not be prompted again by Duo Security if you are using the same browser window. This functionality relies on browser cookies, and “remember me” will not work if you close your browser, switch to a different computer, or if your browser does not allow cookies.
