Over the last few days we have seen an increase in scam emails circulating throughout the VSC. These scams have resulted in a number of compromised accounts, so we wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone how to avoid these scams:
- Never give your password or Duo codes to anyone. IT and other college offices will never ask for this information, no exceptions.
- Treat every email as a scam until proven otherwise.
- Threatening language, requests for urgent action, and links to web forms are always suspicious.
- Forward suspicious emails to cybersecurity@vsc.edu and our team will validate the message and take action if needed to prevent circulation of scams.
- If you think you may have been scammed, change your password immediately and contact the Helpdesk for support.
Compromised accounts can cause substantial harm. Once a malicious actor has your username and password they can redirect direct deposits, cancel courses and collect refunds, impersonate you to propagate more scams, and even use these credentials to access other sites outside of the VSC.
Thank you all for your continued vigilance, and if you have any questions please contact the Helpdesk or our Cybersecurity team at cybersecurity@vsc.edu.
Thank you,
The VSC Cybersecurity Team
