When accessing services that use the VSC login you are required to enter your username and password and complete a Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) step. The MFA step is typically completed by approving the login using the Duo mobile app on a personal phone. Though, there are other ways to complete this step. Read on to learn about this important security feature.

MFA is required
All members of the Community College of Vermont and Vermont State University are required to MFA when accessing services that use the VSC login. This includes students, faculty, and staff.
MFA is an important security measure and adds an extra layer of protection by requiring a second form of authentication. To learn more about how it makes you more secure, check out the cybersecurity team’s post Cybersecurity Awareness Month – Multifactor Authentication.
How it works
The Vermont State Colleges uses Duo Security to protect our accounts. New users are automatically enrolled in this system and set up there accounts the first time they login. Read more on our enrollment with Duo Security page.

Can I stop using Duo?
We get asked a lot if you can stop using Duo. Some users live in locations with no cell service, or can’t receive text messages because they don’t have a smartphone. Others use services that require authenticating frequently and Duo becomes a burden.
The bad news is that Duo is a requirement and you cannot opt out or stop using it.
The good news is that there are a number of ways to limit its impact. Specific scenarios, like not having a smartphone, are covered on our Frequently Asked Questions about MFA page.
Tips to improve your Duo experience
Download the mobile app
The Duo mobile apps are quicker and easier to use than entering a code from a text message. Plus, you can use them when connect to wireless networks and don’t require cell service.
Remember your device
Duo can remember your device for 24 hours. Just check the box that says “remember me for 24 hours” when authenticating and you won’t have to authenticate with Duo on your device until the next day.
Canvas Student and Microsoft Outlook apps
Some apps require less frequent logins. Two of the most common smartphone apps used by students and staff require infrequent logins, and you only have to complete the Duo step when you login!
